iOS Lesson 2.1: Two Finger Gestures

That is great, you did it!

You will use the One Finger Swipes, and the One Finger Double Tap as your main method of controlling the VoiceOver cursor as you move through these pages and the different screens on your device.

Next, we will explore three reading gestures that you can use to hear what is on your screen in different ways.

The Two Finger Single Tap

The first is the Two Finger Single Tap, this pauses and restarts VoiceOver speech. You perform this gesture by tapping the screen with two fingers once.

Let's try it out, Swipe Left with One Finger to have VoiceOver speak the previous line, then use the Two Finger Single Tap to pause the speech. Try it out now and come back when your done.

Great, you are doing very well. The last two gestures you will learn in this lesson give you more control over how VoiceOver reads the information on the screen.

The Two Finger Up and Down Swipes

The Two Finger Up Swipe jumps the VoiceOver cursor all the way to the top of the screen and begins reading from there, it will continue to read until it gets to the last item on the screen, unless you pause it with a Two Finger Tap.

The Two Finger Up Swipe gesture does not speak the Status Bar items at the top of the screen, however it will read screen items in your browser or app window.

To read the Status Bar items, slowly Slide One Finger Down onto the screen from the top edge to select one of the items in the status bar, then swipe with one finger to move to the other items.

The Two Finger Down Swipe starts VoiceOver reading from the current VoiceOver cursor position; it will continue until it gets to the last item on the screen.

The VoiceOver Practice Area

In order to get good at anything, you must practice. You can practice the VoiceOver gestures on this page, or in a special area called the VoiceOver Practice area. It is an area in the VoiceOver settings where you can practice using the gestures without affecting your device or its settings, the instructions are included below.

When you practice a gesture in the practice area, VoiceOver will describe the gesture, tell you the resulting action that would have happened, such as when it says Two Finger Single Tap, Toggle Speech.

No matter where you practice these gestures, remember to try different ways of making the gestures, if a gesture doesn't work, try using a quicker or slower movement, especially when you are making double taps or swiping gestures.

Make sure to swipe directly left or right on your screen when making gestures. To swipe, try brushing the screen quickly with your fingers. For best results when using multi-finger gestures, hold your fingers with some space between them.

Go to Settings/Accessibility/VoiceOver/VoiceOver Practice.

Make sure VoiceOver is on, find the VoiceOver Practice button, then double tap to start.

Practice the following gestures with One and Two Fingers:

  • One Finger Tap or Touch

  • One Finger Swipe Left, Right, Up, and Down

  • One Finger Double Tap

  • Two Finger Single Tap

  • Two Finger Swipe Up

  • Two Finger Swipe Down

When you are finished practicing, find and double tap the Done button to exit VoiceOver Practice, and then return to this page and continue to the Link below to move on to the Magic Tap gesture.
