Why Four-Finger Gestures?

Four-finger gestures are like a teleport button for your screen. Instead of swiping through every single item, you can jump straight to the top or the bottom of the screen.

This is very helpful on long pages, lists, messages, or emails.

How to Do a Four-Finger Tap

Four-finger single taps use one hand with four fingers.

  • Gently spread out four fingers on one hand.
  • For the top gesture, tap once with four fingers near the top edge of the screen.
  • For the bottom gesture, tap once with four fingers near the bottom edge of the screen.
  • You don’t need to be perfect – just roughly near the top or bottom. VoiceOver will tell you if it worked.
  • If it doesn’t work, try again slowly and make sure all four fingers tap at the same time.

What Four-Finger Taps Do

  • Four-finger single tap near the top – Move the VoiceOver cursor to the first item on the screen. (For example, the first heading or the very top of a webpage.)
  • Four-finger single tap near the bottom – Jump to the last item on the screen. (For example, the last message in a list, or the bottom of a page.)

A common pattern is to:

  • Use the top tap to jump to the start, then swipe right to explore.
  • Use the bottom tap to jump to the end, then swipe left to move backwards.

On your iPad or iPhone, try four-finger taps on:

  • A long Messages conversation.
  • A long webpage in Safari.
  • Your email inbox or another long list.

Use the four-finger top tap to jump to the beginning, and the four-finger bottom tap to jump to the end.
