What Is the Two-Finger Scrub?

The two-finger scrub is a gesture that looks like you are drawing a quick letter “Z” on the screen with two fingers. Start on the top left, slide across to the top right, then move diagonally down toward the bottom left.

With VoiceOver on, the scrub often means: “Cancel this”, “Go back”, or “Close this pop-up”.

Common places you might use the scrub:

  • To dismiss alerts or pop-up menus
  • To close a modal dialog (like the one in this game)
  • To back out of a screen in some apps instead of finding the Back button

On this page you will:

  1. Practice the “Z path” using a simple button game.
  2. Open a jungle modal and practice dismissing it using the scrub gesture.
  3. Review how to move around and activate items in a modal before moving to 2.5.

1. Practice the “Z” Path

Imagine the screen has an invisible “Z” drawn across it:

  • Start near the top left
  • Move across to the top right
  • Then move diagonally down toward the bottom left

In real life, you would trace this “Z” with two fingers as the scrub gesture. In this game, you’ll press the vines in the order that matches the Z path.

VoiceOver tip: As you swipe through the buttons, picture where they are: top left, top right, bottom left.

2. Practice Dismissing a Modal

A modal is a pop-up window that appears on top of the screen and grabs focus, like a menu or alert.

In many apps, you can use the two-finger scrub to dismiss or close a modal.

  1. Turn VoiceOver ON.
  2. Activate the Open Jungle Modal button.
  3. Once the modal opens, explore the items inside using VoiceOver.
  4. When you’re ready to close it, try doing a two-finger scrub (Z motion) anywhere on the screen.
  5. If that doesn’t work in your browser, you can also activate the Close Menu button inside the modal.
