Math Equations on iOS

MathML is used to display and format mathematical equations in applications and on the web. Without MathML, these equations don't make any sense when they are displayed.

As of this writing, MathML is supported in Firefox, Safari, and most recently the Chrome browser.

VoiceOver can read MathML equations in supported apps such as Books and Numbers, and on the web in the Safari app.

When VoiceOver reaches a Math ML equation, it will read it as it normally does, adding "math" to tell you that it's a math equation.

To explore a MathML equation:

Navigate to the equation and Double-Tap with One Finger.

Then use the Rotor to select how you want to explore the equations elements:

Symbols, Small Expressions, Medium Expressions, or Large Expressions.

Use the Swipe Up or Down to move through the elements of that type. You can continue to Double-Tap the selected element to move further in to focus on the element.

Swipe Left, Right, Up or Down to read one part of the equation at a time.

Equations spoken by VoiceOver can also be accessed on a Refreshable braille display using Nemeth Code.

Turn on VoiceOver, and explore these sample equations:

Exponents

a 2

Integral

5 x + 2 sin x dx

Root

c = a 2 + b 2

Matrix

E = 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1

Add mathematical equations in the Numbers App.

You can add mathematical expressions and equations as floating objects on a spreadsheet.

To add an equation, you compose it in the Numbers App equation dialogue using LaTeX commands or MathML elements, and insert it into your spreadsheet.

You can also add equations inline with the text inside text boxes and shapes.

Add an equation with LaTeX or MathML

Do one of the following:

Place the equation inline with text: Place the insertion point in a text box or shape, or select the text you want the equation to replace.

Place the equation so it can be moved freely: Tap outside the sheet to make sure nothing is selected.

Tap The Insert Button, tap The Media Button, and tap Equation.

Enter a LaTeX or MathML equation using the keyboard and the symbols above the keyboard.

Tap Insert and Drag the equation to re-position it on the sheet.

Edit, delete or move an equation with LaTeX or MathML

Edit an equation: Double-tap the equation, make your changes and tap Update.

Move an equation: Tap the equation, and drag it to a new location on the sheet or in the text.

Change the size or color of an equation: Tap the equation, tap the Format button, and tap the Style or Arrange tab.

Copy an equation: Tap the equation, tap Copy, tap where you want the equation, and tap Paste.

Delete an equation: Tap the equation, and tap Delete.

Move a floating equation inline with text: Cut and paste the equation on the sheet into a text box or shape.
