Top and Bottom of Window
To navigate to the top of any application window (i.e. web page, word document, email, etc.) press control plus the home key. To navigate to the end, press control + end. If you navigate to the top of this page by pressing control + home, and then use the say all command (JAWS key + down arrow), you can hear the entire contents of this page read continuously, start to finish.
Try It: If you navigate to the top of this page, you should hear JAWS say "JAWS lesson 1.3." If you navigate to the bottom, you will hear copyright 2025. To navigate back to this location, you can use the strategy of navigating by paragraphs (control + up or down arrow). Go ahead, navigate to the top and bottom of this window, then find the paragraph that begins with "great work" for your next set of instructions. ).
Great Work! Use your down arrow to read about our next navigation strategy.
Window Title
Have you ever been working on your computer and you have no idea where the JAWS focus is located? Maybe you've just opened a new webpage, but you aren't quite sure it was the correct webpage. What do you do?
As someone who has been in this situation, I use the following command, JAWS key + t. This command will read the title of the window where JAWS is currently focused. No getting lost on my watch! Try it now. What do you hear?
Say All
One last reading strategy we have to discuss. JAWS has a "say all" feature. If you press the JAWS key (either insert or caps lock depending on your keyboard layout) plus the down arrow, JAWS will read continuously beginning with the current location of your JAWS cursor, or beginning with the last item you heard. This can be done in a document, a web page, basically any application window.
To pause speech, just simply press the control button once. To resume reading, use the "say all" command again
There is another practice section below. This time press your JAWS key plus down arrow to read the entire story at once. Press control when you hear "stop here." Count to five, and then keep moving through the lesson.
Story: Freddy the Spunky Frog
Freddie was a small, green frog with bright orange spots and an even brighter personality. He lived at the edge of a sparkling pond, where dragonflies buzzed and cattails swayed in the breeze. Unlike the other frogs, who liked to sit quietly and croak in harmony, Freddie loved adventure—and mischief.
One sunny morning, Freddie spotted a picnic blanket near the pond. The moment no one was looking, he leapt onto the blanket and began hopping on the sandwiches! The ants were not happy, and the kids watching laughed and tried to shoo him away. But Freddie was too quick, leaping from bread to cookie without missing a beat.
Later, he discovered the farmer’s vegetable garden. He poked his head into the carrot patch and nudged a tomato off the vine. The farmer shouted, “Hey! Who’s causing trouble?” But Freddie only croaked loudly, as if he hadn’t done a thing. He hopped away before anyone could catch him, leaving the vegetables slightly squished but still mostly safe.
Freddie’s favorite trick, though, was at the pond. He would hide behind lily pads and leap out to scare the ducks. They would flap and quack, splashing water everywhere. Even the old turtles would lift their heads in surprise, shaking their shells. Freddie thought this was the funniest thing in the whole pond.
At the end of the day, Freddie sat on his favorite rock, watching the sun set over the water. He might have caused some trouble, but he always made the pond more exciting. All the animals knew Freddie the spunky frog would never sit still—and that was just the way they liked it.
